By the time the 1990s opened, the basic design of the Porsche 911 was nearly three decades old. No matter that it had evolved considerably during that period; the question looming in the minds of many buyers was whether it really could remain at the pinnacle of high-performance motoring for such a long time. That same question had been raised in the Boardrooms of other car manufacturers, too. As the articles reprinted here demonstrate, there was no shortage of challengers for the 911's crown during the first half of the 1990s. One major reason was that this was the dawn of a new age of sports cars, a breed which had become distinctly unfashionable during the 1970s and 1960s as massive increases in the cost of petrol had called into question any car which was not dedicated solely to practicality and fuel economy. Manufacturers flocked to produce new models as memories of that dark period receded. Just look at the cars lined up for comparison with the 911 in this book. So was the 911 able to retain its crown in the face of such intense opposition? Let us simply say that one result of the struggle was that Porsche announced an all-new 911 towards the end of the 1990s. As for how it fared against its rivals, see what the experts thought at the time.
