Every now and then a book comes along that
surpasses your expectations and Gavin Farmer’s
latest tome most definitely falls into that category.
BMW Coupés charts the design and development of
two generations of 6 Series (the E24 and E63) and
the E31 8 Series.
Regular readers will be familiar with Gavin’s work
and over the years he’s written some fascinating
pieces for BMW Car – such as his scoops on three
BMW prototypes, the wild M8, the stylish 8 Series
Convertible and the bonkers V16-engined E32 7
Series. Then there have been his in depth stories
on some of BMW’s lesser known Z cars – the
gorgeous Z13 city car, the slightly mad Just 4/2 and
the story behind the electric E1 in this issue.
What really separates Gavin from the vast majority
of motoring scribes is his attention to detail when
researching a topic – if he can’t get to the bottom of
a story through speaking to those involved he simply
won’t submit it for publication. Thus, as you’d expect,
Gavin has spoken to all the major players who were
involved in the design and development of the E24
6 Series, E31 8 Series and the E63 6 Series and has
produced a book full of glorious detail and little
snippets of information that we’ve never even heard
before. And it’s not just the road cars that are
covered either; the racing Sixes (both E24 and E63
varieties) also receive their moments of glory and
two of BMW’s forgotten coupés – the 1600GT and
the Glas V8 – also come under the spotlight.
In its 300 pages BMW Coupés contains hundreds
of pictures, cutaways and styling sketches. Handily,
there are also sections on buying and owning one
today, plus extensive model data pages and
production figures too.
