Japan had already announced its intention of competing in the world sports car arena many years before the MR2 arrived, and had demonstrated its ability only too clearly with the 240Z. But the MR2 brought something new to the party, because its mid-engined layout showed that the Japanese makers were capable of exploiting the most modern technology as well as imitating that of the past. Over the fourteen years covered in this book, the MR2 was compared to an astonishingly wide range of other sporting machines. Most of the time, the Toyota acquitted itself exceedingly well. Of course, the MR2 itself developed considerably over those thirteen years, too. Back in 1984, it was introduced as a 122bhp model with a 1.6-litre 16-valve engine. Five years later the original, rather angular styling, was modernised with more sleek and curvaceous lines. Engine options multiplied, and the most ferocious became the 245bhp Turbo - more than twice as powerful as the original car. Enthusiasts will have their own opinions about some of the cars which were pitted against the MR2 in comparison tests. The articles in this book provide an opportunity to challenge those opinions, and give hard facts about performance to settle most arguments. Best of all, they set the popular Toyota in the proper context of its contemporaries and rivals.
