Citroen was founded in 1919 by Andre Citroen and is claimed to have been the first mass-production car company outside of the USA. Within eight years it became Europe’s largest car manufacturer. The story of the first 90 years of cars and commercial vehicles are told here by C David Conway. When we decided to add a Citroën title to the Auto Review series, the obvious author was our old friend David Conway, a world-renowned expert on Citroëns. David had his first contact with Citroen cars when he drove his father’s new Light 15, and subsequently in 1954 he drove the Slough-built 2CV SPP 979 when it was the demonstration car in the Citroen Press Fleet. Nine years later David bought this car and he kept it for 45 years, before it went to Citroen in France to go on show at the Conservatoire. Over the following years David progressed upwards via Ami, Dyane, BX, Xantia and C5 models. He has been an active member of the Citroen Car Club for nearly 50 years and served on the committee before being allowed ‘early release for good behaviour’ after 35 years. David was activein the formation of Amicale Citroen Internationale, which unites the Clubs throughout the world, and was credited with starting the International Citroen Car Club Rallies which take place every four years.
