Striving for speed records is like exploring, the faster man travels, the more difficulties he encounters, and then the more he is determined to overcome and understand them. As he proceeds, stage by stage, so gradually he penetrates farther into the unknown. It becomes something of a disease in the blood which feeds upon inclination and atmosphere. Donald Campbell Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell - father and son the complete story of their record breaking Bluebirds on land and water. The Unobtainable – a story of blue is a triumph for Campbell historian and author David de Lara who has managed to hardback 286 pages. With many unseen images from a father and son record breaking dynasty, a journey is taken from Malcolm’s earliest days through to Donald’s great achievement of breaking both land and water speed records in the same year; something that is unlikely to be repeated and took place fifty years ago this year in Australia on lakes Eyre and Dumbleyung. The publication alone will be the desire of all ‘speed enthusiasts’, but the addition of a superb DVD ‘Remembering Donald’ which offers an 80 minute in-depth celebration of Donald Campbell’s life including much previously unseen footage makes it a must for the collector. Finally the book incorporates work by renowned cartoonist Banx that complement the images from yesteryear, whilst Colombian artist Gloria Avila provided great portraits of both father and son. This book is certainly something not to be missed!
