motorsport publishing company, SA Motorsport Memories, is excited to
announce that the long-awaited book – 60 Years of Porsche Racing at Kyalami, is
finally in print. The new publication covers the history of Porsche racing at the
Midrand circuit from 1961 to the present day.
The history of Porsche’s success at the circuit dates to the circuit-opening 9 Hour race held
in 1961, up until the race-winning return of the 9 Hour race in 2019, including the brand’s
last appearance to date at an international race held at Kyalami in early 2023.
The publication covers the Porsche cars, engines and drivers which raced at Kyalami in the
international endurance races spanning over six decades. It also covers the Porsche 944
Turbo Cup Series which ran in South Africa from late 1987 until the end of the 1989 season
as well as the brand’s brief, but successful return, as an engine supplier, to McLaren in
Grand Prix racing. Other Porsche cars and drivers that competed in local series also feature
in separate chapters. The book contains over 550 special images, most of which have never
been published before, with each of them accompanied by a detailed caption in both
English and German. Statistics of all the races cover the car types, drivers, chassis numbers
and results.
Legendary motoring scribes, Roger McCleery, Stuart Johnston, André de Kock, Hendrik
Verwoerd and Roger Houghton each pen a story of their unique Porsche Kyalami memories
with renowned Porsche historian Wernher Hartzenberg making a fascinating contribution
covering the early years.
The 378-page high-quality large format book (280mm x 240mm) covers the vast and
impressive competition history of Porsche at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit with forewords
by Toby Venter, Derek Bell, David Piper and Sarel van der Merwe. The book is available in
two editions.
