The fourth-generation Camaro announced in 1993 was a smaller car than its predecessor. Designed from the start as both coupé and convertible, it followed the Camaro tradition of simple engineering with its live rear axle. Also in the Camaro tradition was a competent but rather lacklustre base motor, in this case a 160bhp V6. The real excitement of course came with the V8 powered models and, as the articles here make clear, automotive writers clamoured to get their hands on the Z-28 performance model. For the very lucky and for a small number of very lucky buyers, there was the Super Natural C-8 from aftermarket specialists Callaway. That, too, figures among the models tested in this book. Development during the 1990s brought the Camaro even more performance, and although the car retained its essentially basic specification there were cutting edge features such as a six-speed manual gearbox to go with the 288bhp 5.7-litre V8 by 1998. Together with its Pontiac Firebird stable mate the Camaro epitomised the affordable American performance car of the late 1990s. Models include: Z28, Coupe, V6, Convertible, Callaway SuperNatural C8, ZL1, Z28 1LE, Z28 SS & Lingenfelter LS1. 140 pages, 300 illus. SB.
